Rising Above the Chaos

Consider: CMS Expansion of Accelerated & Advanced Payments Program

Included in the CARES Act was a relief program specific to Medicare Part A Providers and Part B Suppliers.  While this information may not directly pertain to you, consider if it may be of assistance to any of your vendors or customers.

In addition to the SBA emergency loan options, the CARES Act contains a provision to expand the Accelerated and Advance Payment Program during the COVID-19 emergency. This program will allow Medicare Part A providers and Part B suppliers to receive accelerated/advanced payment on Medicare claims. Providers/Suppliers must have billed Medicare for claims within 180 days immediately prior to the request. The CMS Fact Sheet contains the detail of the program.

Repayment will begin in the form of recoupment 120 days after the issuance of the payment.  After the 120-day delay period, any Medicare claims submitted will be applied to the advance payment balance.  If a balance remains after the repayment period, the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) will send a request for repayment of the balance.

Provider Type Accelerated/Advance Amount Repayment Period
Inpatient acute care hospitals, children’s hospitals, certain cancer hospitals 125% of 6 Months
of Medicare Payments
1 Year from Day of
Accelerated Payment
Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) 100% of 6 Months
of Medicare Payments
All Others 100% of 3 Months
of Medicare Payments
210 Days from Day of Accelerated Payment

To apply, complete and submit a request to your MAC. Each MAC has a similar but separate request form with submission instructions.  The forms we have viewed are 1 page and require minimal information.
